Description
This is an unusual carved Black Forest table which dates to the latter half of the 19th century.
The table was found in a rural country manor house in South Devon, the property of a collector of antiquarian books who had many unusual and wonderful pieces.
The base of the table, with its single tall column, is heavily carved in the style of the Horrix brothers.
The naturalistic carved tree column is superbly detailed and has a lizard and snail on the base and a large beetle further up, the workmanship and quality of the carving is highly skilled. The top with a simple Dutch country scene is almost certainly a later marriage.
