The sculptor and designer Friedrich Grsel is known for his large abstract tubular sculptures, which characterize public spaces in many cities such as Berlin, Constance, Essen and other places in the Rhine-Ruhr region. His work is characterized by modern form-finding and an innovative range of materials.
Initially, Grsel produced figurative and vegetal ceramic works. These were followed by sculptures made of metal and red plastic, inspired by the urbanity of the 1970s. Industrially manufactured products with technical functions are translated into free, aesthetic compositions. Many of his assemblies are variable and can be rotated, inserted or arranged into ever new formations. Grsel’s enthusiasm for three-dimensional form led to his fascination with the human being as a highly complex system of tubes (blood vessels) and condensations (organs). It was in this context that he created his extensive cycle of works entitled “Arbeitsfeld Herz”.
Friedrich Grsel was born in Bochum in 1927. from 1952 to 1956, he studied at the art academies in Munich and Hamburg under Werner Haftmann, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Joseph Fassbender and Fritz Winter, among others. In 1967 he was awarded the Cornelius Prize Dsseldorf for sculpture, to which he now devoted himself exclusively.
