Description
A brilliantly executed and very striking modernist figurative oil painting by Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malm Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum. This affectionate portrait depicts a silhouette of a female figure and male figure standing next to each other and holding hands, set against a background with planes of colours that repeat within the figures. The facial features of the figures have been intentionally left out, focusing our attention to the power and beauty of colour. Through the use of fine and detailed brushstrokes, the artist has skilfully reconstructed this scene down to flat blocks of contrasting colours to highlight the respective forms. The artist outstanding painterly skills is further displayed through the thin outlines around the figures. A range of primary colours create different focal points, encouraging our eyes to move across the picture. This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary silver frame with an inner off white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs to the upper left corner. Size: 68 x 57 cm (including frame)
