Wilhelm Loth trained as a surveyor and took private lessons with Fritz Schwarzbeck and, rejecting Arno Breker and Josef Thorak, oriented himself to Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Ernst Barlach. In 1937 he came into correspondence with Kthe Kollwitz, who encouraged him from 1938 to devote himself entirely to sculpture. from 1940, during the Second World War, he was engaged in labor and military service, while attending Toni Stadler’s sculpture class at the Stdelschule in Frankfurt. In 1946 Loth was released from a two-year prisoner of war. In 1947 he continued his studies with Fritz Schwarzbeck and the following year held a teaching position as an assistant at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt. Loth was involved in the reestablishment of the Darmstadt Secession, serving as its chairman from 1953. from 1958 to 1986 he was professor of sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. In 1955 he was awarded the Art Prize of the City of Darmstadt, which since 1995 has borne the name Wilhelm Loth Prize. In 1959 he received a scholarship from the Villa Massimo. Loth was one of the participants in documenta III in Kassel in 1964. Loth was a member of the Deutscher Knstlerbund, serving as its first chairman in 1989.

Students of Loth were, among others, the sculptor Franz Bernhard, the sculptress Barbara Isabella Bauer-Heusler as well as Jrgen Goertz, Jrn Kausch, Guido Kucznierz, Ingeborg Maier-Buss, Robert Schad, Jutta Schwalbach and Elisabeth Wagner.
